Teamwork - Creating the Best Team Possible

By Maureen Tazzioli

How strong is your team?

If you are a CEO, manager, supervisor or business owner, you may understand the importance of creating and sustaining a supportive team while working towards a common goal. However, do the individuals within your team fully understand the significant role they play in achieving ultimate success?

To help your team get started here are a few suggestions:

1. To ensure that your business' goal is clearly understood by all team members ask each of them to write down, in their own words, what they believe the common goal to be. Then, discuss with each individual their own definition, while answering any questions that may arise in the process. Doing this one step at the beginning will grant you an opportunity to clarify those areas that might not have been fully understood from the very beginning.

2. Ask each individual to write down any difficulties or obstacles that might prevent them from fully participating with the team. Then, in a private and confidential discussion, have each team member share with you their concerns. It is important to note that during this process, trust, respect, confidentiality, and integrity of each person must be displayed at all times. This step is solely designed to remove any concerns that may prevent the team from reaching their main objective, For example, if you place an individual in charge of displays and decorations for a large staff retirement party and your company's budget is $250.00 and the individual team member knows from their past experiences that they would need at least $500.00, then there could be a misunderstanding as to what the outcome is expected to look like. Therfore, discussing all concerns beforehand can save you much time and energy.

3. Once all team members fully understand the common goal and all possible difficulties have been resolved, it is time to move on. During this step have each member of the team write down three of their own strengths and one strength they have observed from their fellow team members. Doing this, helps set the tone for appropriate delegating to take place.

4. Implementation. Once all tasks have been appropriately divided to match the strengths of each team member, it is important to clearly define time restraints and deadlines in which all is to be completed. During the implementation process it will help your team's success rate if honesty, respect, appropriate communication, integrity and appreciation for each member of the team is highlighted. To help keep your team on track you may wish to have weekly meetings to ensure that everyone will successfully meet the expected deadline.

5. Appreciating and acknowledging a job well done. Emphasizing the success of your team and the individual contributions that were made, will help you set the tone for the next time a team project is required. The more praise and recognition each member of a team receives, the greater the chances are that they will continue to succeed in a team environment.
